It is not viable economically to remain this way.
If Obama doesn't talk about that openly, he will lose the moral ground needed and will lose all his energies trying to redefine himself later on.
They don't have what is needed nor the will to impose theirself as sole superpower neither.
So Obama has much greater chance to coordinate and reform the security council, enhancing the international criminal courts role and budget, institutionalize sovereign states foreign intervention rights and deal with refugees with multilateral responsabilities.
There is more to this than just a matter of being passive for 4 years and then picking Shmuck #1 or Shmuck #2 and then being passive for another 4 years.
If people attempt the former then theres a good chance we'll see something, its not going to be a workers paradise of course, if people accept the latter then it will indeed be the same old.
Of course you would need some sort of humanitarian aid force to pick up the pieces.
